Leaflet 26 "Cattle fattening stables"
ÖKL Fact Sheet 26 "Cattle Fattening Barns" covers the husbandry of beef cattle. These are male, castrated, and female cattle over six months of age that are kept for the purpose of beef production. The fact sheet also provides information on calf husbandry in cattle fattening.
What to consider when building a cattle barn:
Barns for this purpose should enable optimal animal performance with minimal labor and humane housing conditions. Furthermore, the necessary care and veterinary treatment of an individual animal must be possible at any time without endangering people. For branded meat programs with sophisticated requirements, housing or structural measures are often required according to the brand's specifications. To keep future options open for the farm in this direction, housing and structural solutions should be implemented that fundamentally allow for appropriate conversion and/or expansion.
Housing systems for beef cattle can be divided into litter-free and litter-based systems. Litter-free systems are based on liquid manure; litter-based systems are usually based on solid manure, depending on the litter quantity and litter structure, but can also be combined (solid manure and liquid manure/slurry).
