On the surface, there is only one difference when it comes to fishing line: braided or monofilament. Until a few years ago, this question did not even arise. This is because braided line is a relatively new alternative to conventional line. Monofilament fishing line is therefore still used by many anglers. And why not? After all, fish were caught before.
But: The braid is clearly superior to its competitor in some areas. Examples of this are the extreme breaking strain with a smaller diameter, which allows you to cast further, as well as the low stretch, which enables direct power transmission and you can feel the lure better. The main disadvantage is that the line can be damaged by underwater objects such as stones or shells. Furthermore, the aforementioned low to non-existent elasticity is also a disadvantage in some situations. The rod should therefore be as soft as possible and the drag should be optimally adjusted in order to have a little buffer and elasticity. Furthermore, it is not quite cheap in comparison.
The advantages of monofilament line are its very good resistance to damage from underwater objects, i.e. its abrasion resistance, its translucency, which makes it invisible in some colors, and above all its low price.
The color choice
As already mentioned, the choice of color is an important issue. When fishing for cod on the Baltic Sea, it is very important to always keep an eye on the line. Because the anglers are often standing close together on a cutter, it helps to avoid getting tangled up. Signal colors in pink, neon green or yellow are therefore the first choice here. Furthermore, many spinning anglers already use signal-coloured lines as it is easier to detect bites. The fish do not react so sensitively here because they only orient themselves to the suddenly appearing, tempting bait. The situation is different, for example, when bottom fishing or when fish are biting cautiously. Here, the line should be as inconspicuous as possible.
