Cow comfort

In addition to their basic needs, such as eating and drinking, resting and exercise, cows also have a strong desire to be able to engage in comfort behavior.

They rid themselves of ectoparasites by rubbing, licking and scratching each other, relieve itching and thus increase blood circulation in the skin.

In order to scratch themselves, cows are very flexible and often use their horns for this purpose.

In housing systems such as loose housing and especially in hornless herds, cows are very keen to use cattle scratch brushes and cow grooming machines.

Acceptance is very high, which shows us that it's pleasant for the cows! The brushes serve to calm the herd and allow the animals to groom themselves. Furthermore, observations have shown that engaging in comfort behaviors (as facilitated by the brushes) can contribute to increased performance, improved weight gain, and better health. Studies have shown that electric brushing systems are generally preferred over rigid ones, that the brushes are used up to six times a day, and that the brushing time and session can last up to six minutes!

It's important to ensure there's sufficient space around the brush, that cows can access the brush unhindered, and that there are enough brushes available for the herd size. Failure to meet these requirements could lead to increased fighting and crowding at the brushes, contrary to their original purpose.
