Chainsaw chain loose - why is that?
Source: Mein Wald mein Holz
A loose chain can not only damage the bar and chain, but also cause injury. Stretching of the saw chain is a constant problem for anyone who puts heavy strain on their saw. This phenomenon often occurs immediately after a chain change. The reason for this is that the high speed of the chain (sometimes over 27 m/s!) when cutting through wood generates heat. This heat causes the chain to expand.
One of the most common causes is low chain tension. If the chain is too loose, it will pull out of the guide bar. Excessive chain wear can also be the cause. In this case, the problem can be quickly resolved with a new chain. Wear on the chain tensioner or drive pinion can also be the culprit. Even minor damage to the guide bar is enough to affect the direction of the saw chain.
It's always advisable to consult a professional for repairs. However, if you check your chainsaw yourself, be sure to wear protective gear!
