Fact sheet 80 “Drinking water supply for cattle”
A sufficient supply of high-quality water is an important prerequisite for healthy and productive cattle. An inadequate water supply can result in reduced feed intake, irregular or inappropriate drinking, urination, low urine output, excessively solid manure or a sudden drop in milk production
On 12 pages, the ÖKL leaflet shows what needs to be considered to ensure that the animals are optimally supplied with water - in terms of species-appropriate water intake, good functional reliability and durability. This allows the right type of drinker to be selected for the respective housing system.
Cattle are suckling drinkers, which requires an appropriate water surface; a table shows the water requirement in liters per animal.
Free access to drinking troughs at all times is the basic prerequisite for a species-appropriate water supply for cattle. It is important to ensure that the animal:drinking trough ratio is not too close and that the drinking troughs are evenly distributed in the barn. This ensures that even lower-ranking animals always have access to sufficient quantities of drinking water. Trough drinkers are usually used in loose housing.
Drinking troughs are mainly made of enameled cast iron, plastic (PVC, PE), stainless steel (Nirosta) or aluminium, whereby plastic has the disadvantage that it becomes rougher over time and is then difficult to clean. Stainless steel is the most robust and easiest to clean!
Two overviews show different forms of trough drinkers and drinking basins (bowl drinkers).
There is also a chapter dedicated to frost-protected drinking troughs, as outdoor climate stables are becoming increasingly important in cattle farming and drinking troughs and water pipes must be protected from freezing by appropriate measures. There is also an overview of different options for grazing water troughs.
