Hobyfarming

What does hobby farming mean?

There isn't really a clear definition for the term "hobby farming" yet. But if you take a closer look at the two terms, you can already draw some initial conclusions.

HOBBY describes pleasure, something beautiful, enthusiasm, and a lot of love. The focus here is less on economic considerations and more on the joy of an activity.

FARMING refers to an agricultural background. A diverse approach to working in harmony with nature and its living creatures. From soil, water, crop cultivation, animal husbandry, and ultimately food, this term completes a circle of naturalness and contentment.

The current trend toward hobby farming brings great joy to many people. The desire for homegrown produce, a meaningful activity, and a consciously sustainable approach to nature are often the primary motivations at the beginning. Agricultural activity, away from the stresses of everyday life, promises variety and relaxation. It can add non-material value to one's own or one's family's lifestyle.

Be it a small corner in your own garden, a balcony in the city or a piece of land that you rent: there are many possibilities for hobby farming, whether with or without animals.

Possibilities:

  • Poultry farming – do you have a suitable location and, depending on where you live, have you clarified whether you're allowed to keep chickens? This very popular option will always provide you and your family and friends with fresh eggs, and the fertilizer can be used in the garden!
  • If you have a larger property with fruit trees or a somewhat steeper terrain that's difficult to mow, two or three sheep are ideal as natural lawnmowers. When purchasing sheep, you should also consider winter accommodation and any necessary feed. Choosing the right breed of sheep is also helpful here.
  • Are you tired of snails regularly visiting your garden? Then it's worth considering getting two or more runner ducks. Female ducks also lay eggs, which are very suitable for consumption.
  • Rabbits and hares are also very easy to keep in your own garden and can enrich family life. But be careful, they require a lot of space and should be kept in pairs at least!
  • Fishing and beekeeping can also be considered hobby farming, as can activities that don't involve animals. A large or small fruit or vegetable garden, for example, can be a great source of joy. Properly caring for the plants, right through to harvesting and processing the produce, can be a great source of enjoyment. And of course, homemade food usually tastes best.

A few tips for hobby farming summarized:

  • Start small and carefully – it shouldn’t be stressful!
  • Don’t try to make a profit from the activity – it should be a hobby and fun!
  • Get well informed – read, research, ask questions (we're always happy to help!)
  • Talk to experts, other livestock farmers, plant growers and maintain the exchange
  • Take your time and enjoy the activity and the result!
