Sowing calendar

Whether it's an extensive cottage garden, raised bed or simply a few containers filled with soil on the patio or balcony, they can be used to contribute to your own vegetable, fruit and herb supply.
It is often a real highlight to watch the little plants grow. The power behind it, rising from the earth as a small seedling and soaking up enough sunlight as a young plant to produce beautiful flowers or juicy fruit.
Particular attention should be paid to the fact that it often makes sense to pre-germinate seeds in a temperate and protected environment. Small flower pots are ideal for pre-germinating vegetable and flower plants. This allows the gardening year to start earlier in spring despite the cold outside temperatures. This gives the plants an early start in the open ground, which means that the harvest can often take place earlier too.
In general, it is particularly important to ensure that there are no more frosts when plants are planted directly outdoors. The date of the “Ice Saints (mid-May)” is usually given as a guideline. After this date, there should be no more late frosts. Before that, it is best to grow them in protected raised beds or on terraces or balconies where frost protection is possible.
The FAIE sowing calendar is designed to help you plan your gardening year in the best possible way. It provides ideas for various plant species that are suitable for cultivation in the individual months.
The boxes marked GREEN show the earliest possible time for sowing. Please ensure that plants can be pre-grown in a sheltered area and, in the case of heat-loving plants (higher germination temperature required), that they are not sown directly outdoors until mid-May if possible.
Boxes marked in pink show possible harvest times for the different crops.
The entire FAIE team wishes you lots of fun gardening!
