Hearing protection when working in the forest

Noise is defined as any sound that can damage hearing. Chainsaw noise frequently fluctuates in volume. Dynamic hearing protection adapts to the fluctuating noise level and only provides protection when the noise level exceeds a certain level.
How damaging is the noise?
Noise exposure of 80 decibels is already harmful to hearing. When working with a chainsaw, noise levels can reach up to 110 dB(A). Long-term exposure to excessively loud noise inevitably leads to noise-induced hearing loss, for which there is no treatment. Furthermore, constant noise leads to fatigue, sleep problems, irritability, high blood pressure, and impaired concentration.
Hearing protection in everyday forestry
Personal hearing protection should be tailored to the needs and specific application of the user. A distinction is made between earplugs, earmuffs, and custom-fitted hearing protection. Every forestry helmet sold in Europe includes certified hearing protection. However, for particularly sensitive ears, this protection is often not sufficient. Especially in these cases, it is recommended to combine the integrated hearing protection with separate earplugs. In everyday life, it turns out that the forestry helmet is removed, especially when you are not working with the chainsaw yourself. However, the noise pollution still exists when someone else is using it. Earmuffs, also known as over-ear ear defenders, are suitable for this situation.
Earmuffs with radio equipment are not recommended for forestry work.
Individually tailored hearing protection
Custom-made hearing protection is literally "designed just for your ears," and is individually adjusted by a hearing care professional. This ensures an optimal fit and maximum comfort. There are no distractions when using a chainsaw, environmental noises (warning calls, breaking branches, rolling wood or rock, etc.) can be electro-acoustically amplified, and the hearing protection is barely noticeable even when worn for extended periods. Of course, the cost of custom hearing protection is significantly higher than for conventional hearing protection, but it's a worthwhile investment for your health.
