The pull rod lifts the membrane and sucks water into the membrane space.The lever then moves again due to gravity and the tension in the membrane backwards. The water is displaced from the membrane space and flows into the drinking bowl. The check valves ensure that the water is always sucked in and pumped in the right direction.Part of the pumped water remains on the top of the membrane and flows into the drinking bowl as soon as the membrane is activated again during the next cycle~ i.e. when the animal presses the lever again (double stroke function)
